From shabby to chic

I thought I’d write something a little different today… My boyfriend and I bought our first house last summer and since then DIY and home decor has taken over my life – I absolutely love it! As a kid I’d draw sketches of my ‘dream’ house after watching far too many episodes of Changing Rooms on TV, and today one of my all time favourite shopping trips are ones that involve home department stores.

I adore scouting for bargains and I’ve been hooked on upcycling since it became popular a few years ago. The idea of turning something old and unloved into something new excites me and there’s so much pleasure to be had in doing it yourself.

I picked up this table from Ebay for £4 – you can’t get cheaper than that! After sanding it down roughly with a hand held electric sander (I purchased a budget sander from Wilkinsons for under £20) I gave it a good wipe down to get rid of any residue. A can of spray paint from Wickes was all that was needed to give it a fresh lick of paint and, once dry, I sanded the corners to rough it up a little.

Now my new, totally unique coffee table sits between our living room sofas and I’m proud of it whenever I enter the room. This kind of project is fool proof and it took me an hour max of labour so there’s no excuse not to give furniture upcycling a go. Just start small!
